«Deviant burials are those where individuals have been buried in a different way from what is considered the norm, often motivated by the status of individuals or by circumstances surrounding their death”.
Evidence for deviant burials has been described in the archaeological and ethnographic records of many past societies. However, due to their singularity, complex theoretical assumptions and methodological venues are usually required to achieve a satisfactory interpretation.
The Deviant burials in Prehistory and Antiquity Workshop aims to explore the current available evidence and discuss new potential lines of study, making a significant contribution towards our understanding of burials featured by bizarre or unusual mortuary practices and/or not fitting well in general explanatory frameworks.
